Jeter becomes the first player for New York Yankees to score 3,000 hits.
Derek Jeter got his hit number 3,000 with a bingo. This was Jeter second hit of the day and 237th home run of his career and the second-longest he’s hit at the new Yankee Stadium.
Jeter became the fourth-youngest to reach the 3,000-hit milestone, behind Ty Cobb, Hank Aaron and Robin Yount, Jeter is the sixth player to accumulate 3,000 hits in his first 17 seasons, with Cobb, Aaron, Stan Musial, Pete Rose and Paul Waner.
Jeter said that: “If I had tried to write it and given it to somebody, I wouldn’t have even bought it, to be quite honest with you, It is just one of those special days. I’ve been lying to you guys for a long time saying I wasn’t nervous and there is no pressure. There was a lot of pressure to do it here.”
It would have been really; really awkward to be out there doing interviews and waving to the crowd after the game if we had lost, So that was going through my mind in my last at-bat there. It is nice to get a hit, but we needed to win this game.” Jeter said.
According to Yankees manager Joe Girardi : “I don’t think you could script it any better, This is already movie-ready to get your 3,000th hit on a home run and then to get 3,003, a game-winner, it is just remarkable the day that he had.”
