France will host Euro 2016, UEFA announced at a press conference in Geneva, beating off competition from Italy and Turkey for the right to stage the event, which will be the first European Championships to see 24 teams compete in the final stages.
France previously staged the tournament in 1960 and were hosts again in 1984.
“This is a beautiful day for us,” said Jean-Pierre Escalettes, president of the French Football Federation.
The 2016 event will feature 24 countries for the first time, up from 16 in 2012, as France becomes the first country to stage the European Championship three times.
